Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences (Uganda) in conjunction with Boston University School of Medicine, and Rutgers University- New Jersey Medical School (USA) received a grant from the U.S. NIH - Fogarty International Center to train Ugandans in Basic and Translational Research on Tuberculosis and Other Emerging Infectious Diseases. It is aimed at building a critical mass of basic scientists in Uganda that will be able to foster and create new frontiers of research in TB or other emerging infectious diseases in host-pathogen interactions with a scientific focus in immunology, microbiology, bioinformatics, virology, pathology, immunobiology or molecular biology. Trainees will be expected to develop and maintain a productive academic career devoted to TB and other emerging infectious diseases.
This program is currently soliciting for applications from suitably qualified Ugandans for Scholarships that will lead to the award of Degree of Philosophy in Basic Science of TB or other emerging infectious diseases at Makerere University. The program will involve training at Boston University School of Medicine or Rutgers University-New Jersey Medical School and at Makerere University. Funding for tuition will be available for a maximum of 5 academic years. A monthly stipend and reasonable research funds will be provided.
i. There are 2 slots for the academic year 2020/2021
ii. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in Medicine (MBChB) (preferred) or a Masters’ Degree in basic science from a recognized university.
iii. Demonstrated interest in laboratory-based research on TB and other emerging infectious diseases.
iv. Evidence of admission to a PhD program is not required at this moment however, note that the eventual funding of successful candidates is dependent on their successful admission to a PhD program at Makerere University.
v. Applicants should be ready and willing to undergo oral interviews.
