The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics is one of the Departments in the School of Biomedical Science, Makerere University College of Health Sciences. It is involved in the teaching of both Undergraduate and graduate programs including PhD candidates, research and services. It also services a number of Programs in the College.

Department Head

Dr. Godfrey Bbosa is a trained Clinical Pharmacologist, a Neuroscientist and Global Clinical Research scholar. Godfrey is a senior lecturer and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Makerere University College of Health Sciences in Kampala, Uganda. He teaches General and Clinical Pharmacology, Neuropharmacology, Psychopharmacology to both Undergraduate and Graduate Medical students at the University.

He holds MSc Pharmacology at Makerere University in Uganda, Masters of International primary Healthcare (IPHC) from University of London, UK, Master of Neurosciences and Behavior from University of Pablo, Seville in Spain, PhD from Makerere University and is a Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program (GSCRT) Fellows from Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. Godfrey has attended various training including Medical Neuroscience, Fundamental of Immunology, Drugs and the Brain, The Addicted Brain, Cellular Biology of Addiction at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), New York, USA; Advanced Techniques in Molecular Neuroscience(ATMN) at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), New York, USA; Neuroscience (Alcohol & Substance abuse, Environment, Epigenetics and Behavior; Neuroscience, Ethics and Survival (SPINES) at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), Woods Hole, MA, USA and many others.

Godfrey has been involved in a number of schools under the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) and Society for Neuroscientist of Africa (SONA); International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN) and Society for Neuroscience (Sfn) in USA. He has supervised over 20 Masters Students and 3 PhD students research to completion. He is a mentor under the Commonwealth Scholarship alumni. He has participated as external examiner and PhD opponent at the Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. He has over 65 publications in the peer reviewed Journals and 4 Book Chapters.

Godfrey is actively involved in research collaboration with Prof Monica Swahn, at the School of Public Health, Virginia Commonwealth University, USA as PI under research topic “The Onward Project On Well-being and Adversity (TOPOWA) Study: Social Drivers of Mental Illness among AGYW in Slums. R01MH128930 funded by National Institute of Mental Health, USA). He is also involved in the research collaboration with Prof. Alvan Ukachukwu (PI), Division of Neurosurgery at Duke University, USA and Prof. David Kitya (PI) at the Division of Neurosurgery at Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda under the research topic “Assessment of neural tube defects among newborns in Uganda: A study of prevalence, risk factors, and the role of gene-environmental interactions (NTDs in Uganda). National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant- 1R21-TW012508-01 / 5R21-TW012508-02 (2022-2024). Godfrey’s research interest is in Neuropharmacology, Psychopharmacology, Alcohol and Substance use, Addiction; Brain trauma, Neural tube defects, Stress, Mental Health and Therapeutics.
